There is no time like summertime. From the way the sun warms up everything around us to the excitement of packing your bags for a vacation, there is no doubt that we are in the midst of good times and positive vibes. When the season starts heating up, also consider switching up those most coveted scents. Summertime fragrances are fun, exotic, whimsical, and full of surprises, and will get you ready for whatever comes your way.  From lighter versions of your faves to floral and citrusy notes, there is something here for everyone's taste and style. We have some amazing suggestions for how to add a touch of sun to your perfume wardrobe, and catch your own waves!

Summer calls for more fruity and lighthearted fare from your fragrance. Consider these two as your new BFFs: Pear Inc. by Julliette Has a Gun and Blood Oranges by Shay and Blue. Pear Incs. would be perfect for the office or anywhere you need a pick me up and a burst of fresh and clean scent. With pear as the top note and ambroxan as a middle note, this is a launch just in time for summer fun! Ambroxan is known to make the top notes shimmer even more and rounds out a scent to show off its best features. Blood Oranges is a beautiful in-your-face interpretation of orange. It is much more than juicy sweetness, mixed with depth and dimension of smoky leather, amber, and woodsy notes. Shay and Blue uses a natural approach to perfumery, with intense orange zest and oils ripe for a citrusy olfactive journey. Both are gender neutral and very sharable!

For a legendary fragrance that has made many fans over the years, you cannot go wrong with Light Blue by Dolce and Gabanna. It is definitely in the summer category, with notes that capture the essence of an Italian coastline. With Sicilian lemons, apple, cedar, and Bellflower as top notes there is a waft of freshness, aquatic and clean. The middle notes bring out the floral notes of white rose and jasmine and the green note of bamboo. The base notes of musk and amber ground the scent and make it last through all of your summer events, from happy hours or date night to long-awaited reunions with family and friends. Light Blue is an unmistakable designer scent that shows the longevity of a fan favorite, with its debut in 2001. Equally craved by men and women, the allure is timeless. Adding this one to your wardrobe would surely add a classic that speaks the language of summertime happiness that never gets old.

Others that are sure to be your next in line for endless summer nights include Aqua Wood by Montale, Juicy Flowers by Mancera (an excellent floral), Still Life by Olfactive Studio, and a new launch by ILK, Sincere.

Sometimes finding a perfect scent is difficult and we know that looking for the best perfume sampling options can also be a challenge. It can be overwhelming in finding the best perfume subscription box services online. We at LUXSB – the official Luxury Scent Box hear this frustration from our members frequently. From referrals, family or friends recommendations, co-workers or neighbors, and searching online, it can be a difficult choice to know who you can trust and which perfume subscription service to choose.

At LUXSB we offer our perfume subscription box service and are confident we can help you discover the perfect scent! Proud to say we are women co-founded and owned! We are your source to discover designer & niche fragrances from all over the world. A variety of classics, exclusives, new arrivals to the latest trends in perfumery. LUXSB is one of the largest sizes availble in a perfume subscription box. Our idea for a perfume subscription came directly from the frustrations we’ve all shared when shopping for a perfume or cologne and we understand it! That’s why we decided to rebuild fragrance shopping from the ground up in 2010.

Many online sites will sell you fragrances, of course, but none of them can draw from our depth of expertise and passion to guide you to the perfect ones. Our mission is to help our members discover scents they love. Today, sampler sizes are central to what we do, and we’re here when you want to upgrade to a larger size, too. As our CEO, Leila says, “Fragrances are not only part of our lives, they’re as individual as a favorite song or pair of jeans.” We also know it’s important for you to know your options as a consumer and have created a list of perfume subscription boxes that we consider the best perfume subscriptions boxes:

Fragrance 101: The Difference Between Longevity and Sillage

By: - Tuesday July 6, 2021
4 min read

In the world of fragrance,  there are many terms that may cause some confusion. With the vast variety of notes and types of perfumes, there is always something to learn. While most consumers just want to explore and purchase the best fit for their personal taste, it is not rare to find websites that refer to a scebt by a category. This may be for what notes it is comprised of or which family it belongs to. Or sometimes, what it performs like. And especially with niche scents, the houses often use sophistaticated terminolgy that could stand to get broken down into easy to comprehend dialogue.

A couple of terms you should know when discovery your perfect scent is sillage and longevity. Perfumers love to show off the many unique facets of scent and display the best of what they offer. Even though fragrance is magical and seems to have superpowers that create mood and attitude, they are as different as the many houses that manufacture them. Thus, there is no one size for all. And there are varying results in any scent for any person. It could be possible that you will not smell like your friend even if you wear the same scent. Some of what creates that uniquely individual experience is in the sillage and longevity categories.

What is longevity? Longevity is how long the scent remains on the skin after spraying. The way it carries on your person. This could be affected by your body chemistry and how well you or others perceive fragrances. Or even what quality resins and oils your fragrance is compromised of. The individual notes and scent family also has a varying element to how a fragrance stays on the skin over time. Some will develop faster from top note to mid notes and then to the final base note that will grab onto your skin and hold the longest. Others may dissipate or disappear quickly.  The ones that fade away or don't seem to last may in fact become a skin scent. That is only detectable to you. Those quiet notes may not get a full blast but could hold to your skin without major development. Some people may not have very well- developed olfactory systems that pick up on subtle changes and may think the fragrance is long gone, when they may just not smell certain notes at all. Many people may go what is called "nose blind". But lo and behold, the scent is not gone, just to that person. Those perfumes or colognes with a higher concentration of pure oils and resins and less water will hold best and not fade like certain body sprays that may need constant reapplying.

What is sillage? Sillage is the way the scent follows or trails you in the air. The waft of scent that is left behind after you leave the room, or absence of one. Some fragrances aren't meant to have a strong sillage and may depend on the characteristics of notes and formulations. Others are based on your skin and body chemistry. How you carry the notes and the presence of certain notes with a mode of body heat may work in creating a bigger scent trail. This is completely a grab bag that will vary with the individual. In general, an eau de parfum versus an eau de toilette is a better way to potentially get stronger sillage from your scent. The manufacturing process will eliminate the amount of water and increase those quality notes, oils, and resins that allow for more concentrated wear. That goes a long way in not getting "watered down" fragrance. There are even perfumes made with the perfume extracts, a L' eau de extrait that is even more potent than an EDP (expect a higher price tag).  Also, the alcohol that is usually in any scent at the initial spritz may carry longer and further on certain body chemistry and boost the scent. Keep in mind choosing an eau de parfum over eau toilette also depends on climate factors. On a hot summer day, one may prefer an eau de toilette.

Sillage is definitely a quality that has to be examined for the occasion and the place the scent is to be worn. Sometimes a quieter scent is much appreciated in an office or hospital environment or other places where you may be gathering in a more crowded than usual fashion or around people who cannot tolerate a stronger scent. The non-offensive and perhaps weaker sillage scent is often the choice for others around who may suffer from scent sensitivity. Know your fragrance and how it behaves to select the right one for the right moment We hope this has helped answer some questions about fragrance sillage and longevity for you! Share and continue to enjoy the surprise and wonder of fragrances with LUXSB!

New and Niche: Juliette Has a Gun Pear Inc.

By: - Sunday June 20, 2021
2 min read

So, how do you capture the essence of a juicy ripe pear? Maison Juliette Has a Gun has the answer. This niche brand created in 2006 by Romano Ricci, grandson of Nina Ricci and of the creator of the classic L'Air Du Temps Robert Ricci,  has always been on the cusp of unique and edgy. Pear Inc. is an ode to another side of Juliette, the protagonist of a fragance line's story. Each perfume in the house is another form of Juliette and her liberation through scent. Ideal for the long days of  summer, the green pear is the center of this composition, a fruit note that is made richer by a blend of musks.

Pear Inc. is a great combination of the fruity and musk categories. Fresh and watery, the green pear is displayed in the top notes. The heart note is cetelox, a synthetic hypoallergenic molecule that leaves a clean and crisp effect. The base notes are musks, that adds projection and grounds it. This fragrance reveals a complexity that is uplifting and cheerful, like picking a ripe pear and soaking up that familiar happy feeling of taking a bite.

Juliette Has a Gun is a house of amazing cult classic worthy scents and the addition of Pear Inc. guarantees JHAG's presence as a favorite niche line. Try out this new niche fragrance today with LUXSB!

Keeping Up With the Boxes

By: - Monday June 14, 2021
3 min read

Everywhere you look there's a new subscription box service. Monthly cat food, workout accessories or even just random 'stuff', whatever you want it's probably available. The subscription box landscape is changing faster than we can probably all keep up however, we at LUXSB want to continue the legacy of being a luxury brand provider.

LUXSB is one of the original perfume subscription services. Specializing in niche fragrances and catering to those who appreciate finer quality, we are constantly looking for ways to improve not only our product offerings but the customer experience as well. While 2020 was definitely full of surprises, unprecedented times and endless days at home, we at LUXSB took some time to revisit our business and have come up with a handful of improvements we think everyone will enjoy.

Updated Plan Structure and Site Improvements

  • We offer a single 'base' plan giving you access to our subscription service. In the past we had multiple tiers, annual plans, premium plans etc. Starting with one single plan will help make monthly pricing easier to understand and allows us to focus on giving you more options in the future.
  • The LUXSB Monthly Plan is now $15.95 a month. This gives you access to our fragrance calendar where you can choose to have any one of our standard fragrances sent to you each month with no additional charge.
  • We offer 'Premium' and 'Ultra Premium' fragrances at a minimal extra charge on the month you receive the fragrance. Premium fragrances are an additional $5 while Ultra Premium are $10 additional.
  • Premium and Ultra Premium fragrances are indicated on the product page and will be itemized as a billing estimate on your user account page.
  • We have updated the user account page to reflect what makes more sense. You will see your next fragrance that will be shipped, itemized extra charges and a total estimate for your next month charges.
  • We offer two pre-pay options during sign-up. You will pay the base subscription charge for your first month plus an additional amount to cover future shipments. If you choose this option, we will give you credit based on the amount you choose. Pre-pay $100 and receive a $20 credit. Pre-pay $200 and receive a $40 credit. Your available 'credit' will also show on your user account page.

Upcoming

  • As we refine our user experience as well as our billing system, we will be offering an easier way to 'add on' products each month. The billing will all be handled on your regular billing date and allows us to bundle your products in one shipment.
  • A smartphone app is coming soon. As we refine the pricing structure and billing system, we will be able to create a simple user interface for your to manage your subscription, leave reviews and contact support.
  • Improved rewards. We launched a pilot program 'LUXSB Rewards' allowing you to earn points redeemable to subscription charges. As we receive more feedback on this program, we will be creating easier ways to earn, manage and redeem your points.
  • Updated site. A few years ago the site went through a major makeover. We will be constantly improving the user experience and create easier ways to manage your account, organize your calendar and learn about our fragrances.

Existing customers on our legacy plans will remain on the same plan and price. * You may notice some updates on how your monthly summary is displayed as well as your invoice but that's about it. If you wish to change to the new plan you can contact us at info@luxsb.com.

As always, we invite feedback as we make these changes. Please let us know if something isn't working quite right or if your user experience needs improvement.

What Is The Difference Between Designer and Niche Perfume?

By: - Tuesday May 4, 2021
5 min read

Author: S. McMechan

Fragrance 101 segment is a time to explain and introduce the little things that may make buying or selecting a scent less complicated. Sometimes it is more than the notes, or the time of year, which in itself could definitely make choosing a scent quite a confounding situation. Have you ever thought about what is the the meaning of niche? What is a designer scent and which one is better? And how do I know if I'm wearing a desiger or niche perfume? It may be confusing and here is how it's breaken down in this very educational topic about fragrances.

Let's discuss "niche" perfume! "Niche" is actually a French word in origin which means "to nest". But in the fragrance world, this is the definition of an upper echelon,  a specialty perfume.  A niche is typically made with the finest quality materials and ingredients with the most meticulous and careful hand. Thus, this would also equate to more time taken in creation and fewer of these bottles manufactured at any time. Artisan, unique, and passionate is the work of the niche perfume house. There is more creative freedom and liberty in the niche world. This affects the rarity of these scents and where they are found. Some are only available at select department stores or luxury boutiques and at LUXSB - the official Luxury Scent Box for a monthly supply. And with the luxury status also goes the price tag, often quite pricey per ounce in comparison to a designer fragrance.  Sometimes niche is made with experimentation as the desired goal of being unique, but to set the tone for a memorable scent and singular experience worth the cost. The concentration of the perfume is usually a stronger concentration of oils and longevity of a niche fragrance is more lengthy wear on your skin with each use. To be one of a kind is luxurious and distinct, and niche offers that opportunity. Here at LUXSB, you are able to experience niche fragrances at the fraction of the retail price. A great way to sample first, large size later.

A "house" is the designer that is a perfumery. Like a manufacturer that solely makes fragrances. The house, like a fashion house of designers with a fashion line to show, puts its special artistry and noses together on the development of various scents per season or year or maybe over a course of several years. There may be a collection that links together different scents with a theme.  The house hires the creative noses that designs the most profound perfumes on the market.  These houses are often located in France where many feel the fine art of perfumery was born. Niche fragrance houses now span the globe.  For example, the Middle East house of Amouage is known for its incredibly luxurious Ouds. Mancera offers extraordinary luxurious perfumery with perfectionism, Pierre Montale evokes the richness in materials all in a flask. The house of Maison Sybarite France is the very first clean water-based perfume, which is revolutionary. Parfums de Marly fragrances have the power to take you on a journey that draws it's inspiration from the 18th century, a pinnacle of French elegance. Fair Parfum is a French perfume house that wad inspired by Le Club 1888, set up by it's founder as a perfume connoisseaur's private members' club, it was the only place where people could buy Francis' sought-after scents. Now the fragrances are available to the public for a limited time. There are USA houses with homegrown artistic talent such as Source Adage and Keiko Mecheri fragrances.  You could be taken on a ride from each corrner of the world with perfumes by House of Gallivant Stories, Los Angeles perfume. The limits are boundless, whatever the house's noses can come up with!

So what is designer in comparison and does it smell as good? Of course there are incredible designer brands to select from!  Arguably more than niche, because of the unlimited amount of choices.  A designer is basically where there is a company that manufactures the fragrance and distributes it to various channels. The brand could be small with just a few scents or very large.  Think Gucci, Victor and Rolf, Dior, Dolce & Gabanna, Prada, Versace, or Coach. These are large designer brands that we all know and love! These are just a small part of what the designer can create, and become part of the portfolio. These brands do more than scent and have massive budgets for advertising.  They are seen in print campaigns and commercials or worn by major influencers. So these scents can become legendary and popular very quickly. Think Flowerbomb or Spicebomb or Light Blue by Dolce & Gabbana. Designer is able to be placed on the market widely and carried by many more retailers because it is mass produced.  Not a small batch, but enough created to meet the demand for product across the globe. Non exclusive, not out of reach for many budgets. and easy to locate, sample and smell on others, your designer scents are everywhere and always in style. Some beauty brands are also fragrance makers, such as Estee Lauder or Lancome. These are often scents for many generations to share and pass along, those department store memories of spritzing the bottle onto the wrist and smelling yourself endlessly. That is how designer so easily reaches us, and can be found nearly anywhere from the local corner drugstore to specialty beauty websites.

Hopefully this will help distinguish what niche and designer means.  Whatever fits your personal preference and makes you feel amazing, powerful, and ready for the world is probably the right fit for you! Discover your favorite designer or niche fragrance at LUXSB.

Fragrance 101: Eau De Parfum versus Eau De Toilette

By: - Thursday April 22, 2021
3 min read

We're back with a brand new Fragrance 101 post, guys! Woo hoo! This one discusses a hot topic. This is a question that scent fans will always hear posed one way or another: What is the difference between an Eau de Parfum and Eau de Toilette? That is a really good question being that either can smell absolutely divine, allure the senses and attract others to us. Why does it matter so much? How will choosing either make a huge difference in the way your scent lingers or clings to your own body chemistry? There is an answer to these questions, and I am happy to address the burning question.

An Eau de Parfum has a fragrance oil composition of at least 15 to 20%. That is the essential oils and notes that make up the blend and carry the scent along your day. This will translate to a stronger effect, and a more fully developed scent with the increased level of pure blend. Your EDP is a great choice for date night, evenings, cooler weather, and formal affairs when the perfume is a wonderful way to make an impression.  An EDP tends to be a bit pricier than the Eau de Toilette and may come in a smaller volume per bottle.  The bottle of juice may have a somewhat shorter shelf life than its softer EDT counterpart because of a slightly lower alcohol level. There are also variations on the potency, or strength in EDP. An EDP extrait has an even larger concentration of pure oils, therefore is one of the sought after and luxurious forms of perfume.

The Eau de Toilette has a slighter lower amount of fragrance oils, 10%-15%. This is typically a softer side of a fragrance, that may not linger as long and may need to be applied more generously. EDT is sometimes considered a go to in the Spring and Summer months or in an office environment where noses may be more sensitive to stronger intense scents. Consider it a splash versus a full on spritz. Although there is less of the pure oils, this definitely doesn't mean that an EDT is not as lovely or popular. Going lighter may offer a variation in notes of your favorite fragrance. It may enhance the way the notes combine, and add allure to the experience of the formula. Think of it as an alternative to spraying much more or too much of your pricier treasures, and being easier on the senses as a whole.

Hopefully the debate has been somewhat settled for now. Both are beautiful ways to wear and appreciate the art of perfumery and to enjoy being good to yourself during these trying times of 2021. Continue sniffing and discovering your favorite scents and the joy they bring.

Until next time!
